AstroTurf Incorporates AlphaSan Antimicrobial Into New Generation of Synthetic Turf A highly effective antimicrobial agent found in fabrics, bathroom fixtures and the linings inside water coolers and ice machines has found a new application in synthetic turf.
Developed by Milliken Chemical, AlphaSan® is a zirconium phosphate-based ceramic ion-exchange resin with silver. Added during the manufacturing process, AlphaSan® becomes a permanent component of the fiber itself. These antimicrobial properties bring additional value through product differentiation to a variety of turf applications. Bacteria, fungi, and algae find their way into synthetic turf through contact with human skin, food, and moisture, among other things. These microorganisms reproduce and often result in odor and discoloration. Testing shows AlphaSan® consistently eliminates approximately 99% of these contaminants from synthetic turf. “AstroTurf, LLC. is the first and only manufacturer to offer antimicrobial turf products for synthetic sports field systems,” says AstroTurf president Bryan Peeples. “With AlphaSan®, we’re seeking to protect not only the innovative products we produce, but the players and people who use them and the environment as well.” For over forty years, AstroTurf has been at the forefront of technology, and design in synthetic turf for indoor and outdoor sports surfaces and landscaping applications. The focus of the new generation of AstroTurf, in not about protecting innovation, but more importantly, innovating protection. AstroTurf, LLC is headquartered in Dalton, Georgia.
