The Socorro Independent School District will receive a check for $102,900 today from the El Paso Water Utilities.

The money is a rebate for SISD's replacement of its Student Activities Complex grass with synthetic turf. El Paso Water Utilities officials, who believe the district will save 8.7 million gallons of water every year, called it one of the largest rebates ever extended through its $1-per-square-foot program.

SISD athletic director Ron Leiman said the rebate will pay about an eighth of the $800,000 it cost to install the turf.

"We understood the rebate would be considerable," Leiman said. "It's something that towns throughout the Southwest need to look at given the water situation."
